Cerebral palsy is a disorder caused by damage to the brain during pregnancy, delivery or shortly after birth. It is often accompanied by seizures, hearing loss, difficulty speaking, blindness, lack of coordination and/or mental retardation. Gastrointestinal dysfunction that includes swallowing disorder, reflux, abdominal pain, chronic pulmonary aspiration, constipation, and food intolerance are also seen in about 92% of children with cerebral palsy. About 25% of cases come from a prenatal cause such as anemia, improper nutrition, viruses, x-rays, or premature delivery. Many are caused by a lack of oxygen, while the remainder is of unknown cause. Recently a number of reports have been published in the medical literature, and our clinical experience has shown positive results with the use of Supercharge Oxygen (also known as hyperbaric oxygen). Pressurized oxygen is given to the patient via oxygen mask while he/she sits in an enclosed chamber. For small children, mom or another caregiver sits in the chamber with the child. Brain injured tissues are thought to have damaged blood vessels which prevent oxygen from getting to the injured areas. The lack of adequate oxygen prevents the damaged brain tissues from functioning normally and, if present, causes the loss of functions seen in cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries and strokes. It has now been proven that daily treatment with supercharged oxygen stimulates the formation of new blood vessels to the oxygen-starved, damaged brain tissues. As new blood vessels slowly form, the injured tissues are able to begin to repair themselves and the person is able to function more normally. This translates into better mental and bodily functions At Dr. Steenblock's Clinic we are excited about the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for bettering the lives of cerebral palsy victims and their families, as well as the exciting future promise of stem-cell therapy. |
