Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that can treat a wide array of conditions and injuries. It involves the placement of undifferentiated stem cells into areas with damaged or malfunctioning bodily cells and tissues. Stem cells are able to differentiate into the specific type of targeted cell in the treatment area, healing and forming new functional tissue to address issues at their source. Stem cells are a safe and natural way to treat uncomfortable and bothersome conditions and symptoms.

At Personalized Regenerative Medicine, we provide stem cell therapy for patients in San Clemente and the Southern California area. Dr. David Steenblock leads his practice with an emphasis on cutting-edge regenerative science and effective patient care. We look forward to helping you gain the education and awareness you need to take the next steps in your wellness journey.

About Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy is a burgeoning avenue of restorative treatment, and at Personalized Regenerative Medicine, we are incredibly excited about its potential. The scientific community is just beginning to grasp the healing power of stem cells for the treatment of chronic and degenerative diseases. Stem cells are naturally present within the body to help with tissue development and regeneration. The basic idea of this treatment is to take stem cells from healthy tissue and transfer them to tissue damaged by disease or injury. However, this is just a cursory view. To have a thorough understanding of how stem cell therapy could benefit the individual and society as a whole, you must first understand how it works.

Stem cells are unique cells from which all other cells derive themselves. Simply put, stem cells have the ability to replicate and differentiate into multiple tissue types and are used to promote healing in damaged tissues. (1) The two main types of stem cells are embryonic (pluripotent) and adult stem cells (unipotent & multipotent). Embryonic stem cells (ESC) are controversial due to the fact that a human embryo must be destroyed to harvest the cells. They can differentiate into all cell types and proliferate uncontrollably, thereby posing certain dangers like tumor formation. Adult stem cells (ASC) are effective, but they have a more limited ability to give rise to various types of tissue in the body. They have a pre-programmed timeframe in which they can work in their regenerative capacity. (2) However, they do not carry the ethical issues or the risks posed by embryonic stem cells, and they are the type of stem cells we use here at Personalized Regenerative Medicine.

We can harvest adult stem cells from a number of tissues in the body, such as the bone marrow, peripheral blood, fat cells, umbilical cords, cord blood, placental tissue, and amniotic tissue.

Who is a Candidate for Stem Cell Therapy?

There are many different conditions, injuries, and ailments that could make you a good candidate for stem cell therapy. Research shows that it can be effective in treating a number of different diseases and injuries. Some of the conditions we treat include:

Neurological Conditions:

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

• Parkinson’s Disease (PD)

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)

Cerebral Palsy (CP)

Cardiovascular Conditions:

Heart Disease

• Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

Stroke

Respiratory Conditions:

• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Musculoskeletal Conditions:

• Osteoarthritis (OA)

• Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

• Muscle Strains

Joint Injuries

Other Conditions:

  • Hair Restoration

To be eligible for stem cell therapy, you should be in relatively good health outside of the symptoms that you hope to address. Having a well-functioning body and immune system will increase the chances that the stem cells take to your body and successfully differentiate and proliferate.

Personal Consultation

At your personal consultation, we can answer all the questions you have about stem cells and how we use them at Personalized Regenerative Medicine. You can tell us about your problem areas and we will examine them and assess if stem cell therapy could be an effective solution. We will want to know all about your medical history, including past surgeries, prescriptions, and conditions. This will help us get a better understanding of your body and how it might interact with stem cell therapy. After this, we can create a personalized treatment plan and provide an accurate cost estimate for your treatment. If you decide to undergo stem cell therapy treatment with us, we can schedule your first appointment.

To schedule your personal consultation, call (949) 367-8870 or fill out this form.

Preparation

Based on the information that we learn about you at your consultation, we will create personalized preparation instructions to help you get ready for your stem cell therapy. Following these instructions will help increase the likelihood that your treatment is successful. They may include changes to your prescription medicine intake, as well as guidelines for certain aspects of your everyday activity. Leading up to your treatment, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle to encourage your body to accept the stem cells.

Stem Cell Therapy Procedure

Before your stem cell therapy procedure, we will harvest your stem cells. The exact details of your stem cell harvesting will depend on your unique case. We will prepare the stem cells for therapeutic use before we begin your treatment. We perform stem cell therapy procedures on an outpatient basis. To begin, we will clean your treatment area and administer a local anesthetic to prevent any discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Steenblock will then carefully inject the stem cells into the key areas to ensure that they take hold and have a positive effect. He may use fluoroscopy (x-ray) or ultrasound technology to enhance the precision of the injections. When the procedure is complete, you may go home as soon as you feel ready.

Recovery

Stem cell therapy requires no downtime for recovery, but taking things easy in the first few days after your procedure may encourage its success. You may develop some redness, bruising, or itching at your treatment sites. These symptoms should go away on their own. If they do not, feel free to contact us.

Results

The results of stem cell therapy will reveal themselves gradually. It can take several months for stem cells to differentiate into their targeted form and begin healing and regenerating your treatment area. When the treatment begins taking effect, you will notice a steady improvement in your comfort levels and functionality. The healing of your problem area will bring about an enhancement in your overall well-being as you are more physically capable and less distracted by discomfort. Stem cells can solve problems at their source, so your results should be long-lasting. However, stem cell therapy is not a substitute for traditional medicines and physical therapy. Continuing to treat your problems as holistically as possible will bring more favorable results than relying on stem cells alone.

FAQ

What is the goal of regenerative medicine?

The goal of regenerative medicine is to heal the body to bring it back to working order. It can address symptoms and conditions at their source, fixing the root cause and bringing the body back to, or close to, its initial functionality. As they can differentiate into many types of tissue and naturally promote regeneration, stem cells are a great resource for this type of medicine.

What can stem cell therapy treat?

While it is still a new field of medicine with much research yet to be done, stem cell therapy can treat most conditions that involve damaged tissue. This will depend on the types of stem cells available to use and the type of cells that they need to differentiate into.

Are incisions made during stem cell therapy?

Incision patterns and locations during stem cell therapy can vary depending on the treatment area and the chosen techniques. In some cases, no incisions may be necessary if needles or catheters are used for injecting or implanting the stem cells. If incisions are needed, they are typically small and strategically placed to minimize scarring and improve aesthetic outcomes.

Is stem cell therapy safe?

Stem cell therapy is a low-risk treatment because they occur naturally within the body. Using adult stem cells is safer than embryonic, as the former cannot continue proliferating indefinitely. Unchecked proliferation can lead to tumor growth.
