Bryn is doing well; she was on the special diet that you helped us out with by signing all those authorizations for the school. The diet helped her a lot with seizure control and we were able to liberalize it recently. We still avoid anything with sugar but now she can have a little fruit, and we continue to give her most of the nutritional supplements. She typically has no seizures during the day and maybe a couple of little ones while falling asleep, and in general is much better. J. Cabanillas My daughter Holly and I just returned from 90 hours of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) at Dr. Steenblock's Clinic. Holly is 6 years old, with left-sided, spastic, hemiperetic cerebral palsy as a result of a stroke she had at birth. After speaking to several parents whose children with cerebral palsy had experienced success, we decided to take the plunge. The first thing I noticed was a decrease in her spasticity. Her third and fourth fingers of her left hand have always been "stuck" together. After a few weeks of HBOT, she discovered that she could spread her fingers at will. She is not drawing her left arm up to her chest and fisting as often and she is carrying her arm more relaxed at her side. Her gait has improved. Overall, she is brighter-eyed and is generally carrying herself better. Cognitively, we are seeing many changes. Her attention span and reading comprehension have increased dramatically. A family friend and physician told us that he sees "remarkable improvements in socialization, ambulation, language and comprehension." On a before-and-after HBOT test in expressive vocabulary, Holly went from the 12 th percentile to the 30 th in 5 months. In summary, Holly has shown a decrease in spasticity, increased attention span, more organized thoughts, and increased reading comprehension. Previous to the HBOT, I always assumed that Holly would be dependent upon us and would live at home forever. Now, I am actually feeling like she will be able to live somewhat independently.
